Year 1-MS Word to Enhance Teaching and Learning

Session Goals:
  • gain knowledge about Microsoft® Word as a classroom-productivity tool.

  • become comfortable enough using Microsoft® Word to train your students to use the program effectively

  • share ideas and begin collaborative team relationships with other teachers in our group
  • discover new ways to use this program to support inquiry-based learning in the classroom

  • Community Building and Tootsie Pops:  What is this thing?

    1. Create a question about the thing on the table.
    2. Share your question with the group.
    3. Classify the questions according to Bloom's Taxonomy and the following website:

  • Dinner Break

  • Word Projects
    Work
with your partner.  One person make an award and write a letter. The award should designate which video or online lesson that you chose and which level of activity was demonstrated. The letter can be to the teacher who did the lesson or to another teacher explaining the reason for choosing that level of technology use. The other person should design and type a rubric and a quiz. The rubric should use characteristics of the levels of technology use and be used to evaluate the project chosen. The quiz should be short answer or multiple choice related to the video.

  • Plan for Implementation-identify methods for using Word related to each process step on the constructivist lesson-plan form
    http://www.emints.org/resources/constructivistlesson-form.pdf

  • Practice Using Word as a Teaching and Learning Tool-
    Each one create one:

    • Attribute or characteristic matrix or chart (create with a table)

    •  T-Chart (create with a table)

    •  Plan of action or process checklist (create with bulleted list and change bullets to boxes)

    • Summarizing matrix or chart (create with a table)

    •  KWL chart (create with a table)

    • Outline (create as a numbered list)

    • Flyer or small poster (create with drawing tools with shapes, lines images, clipart, word art and textboxes)

    • Brochure (create with a template)

    • Story book (create with Page Setup > Multiple Pages > Book Fold)

    •  Letter (create with letter template or custom settings)

Select topics you can use for inquiry based lessons and bring the materials you will need to develop the lessons to our next session.
